Amherst CutleryAmherst Cutlery specializes in very traditional folding knives. Amherst's designs are based on Sheffield and early American designs, the patterns are well researched and built utilizing extensive hand-working for an outstanding fit and finish.
Tim Balda, President of Amherst, is a knifemaker and has long been in the knife handle material business. Tim has experience working with high-end materials and the methods for properly using them. Tim's transition from knife handles to making knives is a natural one. The first Amherst Cutlery knife was made on April 10, 2006.
There are some things that never to out of style. Traditional slip joints, hafted in high quality materials and handmade quality will always be in demand. Balda's knifemaking philosophy is, "Knives are tools first, showpieces second. That’s why I look back at traditional designs and methods so I can look forward using modern methods and technologies to make a better every day carry knife."
Tim commented, "The path I have chosen is that of quality, limited production, traditional designs, and the desire to create modern pieces that now can only be seen in history books." Making the ultimate handmade tool for carry or show is the challenge. This coming year I will expand the number of patterns and even include some classical Sheffield desk knives, paper knives and bowie hunters in the mix. This year Amherst will also make a select few xx32xx exhibition knives. For Amherst making the best possible handmade, quality tool is the ultimate objective.
