Mastersmith Jerry Lairson, Sr. has been making knives for more than 40 years. Lairson makes his own Damascus steel and likes to use exotic material, such as mammoth ivory, ebony, cocobolo, bone, stag horn… to make knives which will last a lifetime and can be passed to the following generation. His beautiful and well balanced knives are all of high quality.
Why do you build hammer forged knives? “I think forging high carbon steel makes a better blade. If I thought there was something better I would use it. Also it gives me more creative freedom. I love the way you can make hot steel flow with a hammer.”
Why do you give so much attention to detail? “Sometimes attention to details is what separates a utilitarian object from a work of art. I spend hours and hours on details.”
How do you design a knife? “Every new design I create starts with an idea. Sometimes I think about it for a long time and other times an idea will just hit me out of the blue.”
