Johan Gustafsson was born in 1964 in a small town called Norrkoping that is 2 hours
south of Stockholm, Sweden. He lives very close to the coast and his workshop sits on a scenic lake. Incidentally, area was strategic to the ancient Vikings. Occasionally even Viking swords and other relics are found near his home. In his area, archaeologists have even documented an ancient weapons forge that was active from 1170- 1500 AD.
Gustaffson enjoys boating, fishing, soccer, and hunting. As well he enjoys spending time with his lovely wife and son. He has a special enthusiasm for his local hockey team. He is involved with their sponsorships and gameday promotions. Johan has varied work experience, working for a while as a truck driver and later in landscape architecture.
His life changed when in 1993, when he decided to make a knife before a special moose hunt. From there he became totally addicted to knife making. He commented that, “I decided that this was something I really wanted to work with.” He started to experiment with different steels trying to find the best high contrast steels. With this knowledge, he works exclusively with Swedish tool steels like: 20c, 2550, 17va, 15N20 and nickel. Since 1994, Gustafsson has been a professional knifemaker. He studied the different types steels and bluing processes to achieve vibrant colors in his mosaic damascus. He said, “I will never get tired of creating different kind of designs in the steel and the knives, for me it is a pleasure to be in the workshop everyday.”
His knives have won extensive awards and been featured in numerous international knife magazines and books.
