The Southern Grind Spider Monkey drop point folding knife is an everyday carry folder that can also be used on tactical missions and appreciated by collectors. Country music singer Zac Brown created Southern Grind Knives to produce the kinds of tools that he, as a lifelong knife enthusiast himself, would be proud to own and use. The Spider Monkey model represents a new level of design for this American-made brand that meets the same quality standards as their other fine knives. Each Spider Monkey knife is proudly made in the Southern Grind metal production shop not far from where Brown grew up in Atlanta.
The Zac Brown Spider Monkey drop point tumbled satin folder is 4.2 inches when closed and has a blade length of 3.25 inches. The blade is made of stainless CPM S35VN steel from Crucible Industries and Chris Reeves. This CPM steel is made using a particle metal alloy process that provides even distribution of carbides and elements for increased edge retention and toughness. Because S35VN holds a razor sharp edge, Southern Grind has used steel with a Rockwell Hardness of 58-59 for better durability. The all-purpose drop point blade has a traditional flat grind with a large belly for superior cutting performance for all types of jobs performed with an EDC. A stonewashed tumbled satin finish allows the knife to be used while hiding scratches and normal wear.
This drop point folding knife has a total size of 7.4375 inches and weight of 3.2 ounces, making it compact and controllable on tough tasks. The strong blade is held in a textured black twill carbon fiber handle. The finish of the carbon fiber is matte and lightly blasted for both aesthetics and grip. Aerospace grade titanium liners and spacer pins create a liner lock that keep the "Monkey" open until you want to close. Durable and wear-resistant phosphor bronze bushings are in the pivot so your knife opens and closes smoothly for a lifetime of use.
The shape of the handle on the Bad Monkey is ergonomic and is 3D-machined for a positive grip. The handle has a tumbled satin titanium pocket clip that is mounted for blade tip-up carry, preventing accidental blade deployment, along with a lanyard hole in the handle for carrying around the neck. The Southern Grind Spider Monkey is easy to open whether you are right- or left-handed with the dual thumb studs mounted on the blade spine. You can be confident in having a sure grip with the filed thumb rest on the liners and blade spine allowing you to complete the task at hand. The blade edge is razor sharp making for a precise instrument that it is finely ground on both sides.
This hand-assembled EDC folding knife represents what Zac Brown believes knives should be: rugged, dependable and highly functional. Southern Grind believes they can make any enthusiast into a Spider Monkey with this knife that can handle tropical forests and garage chores alike. KnifeArt is an authorized dealer of Southern Grind knives that are durable and affordable. Can't say enough about this knife. The craftsmanship is superb. Light, sharp, easy opening. Lockup is tight. This has become my favorite carry folder. The pocket clip is smaller than most, but it's as effective (if not more so) than the typical clip. This knife is worth at least $75-100 more than I paid. It also came with a serial number which is somewhat usual at this price point.
Make sure you register your knife at Southern Grind's website, apparently you can have it sharpened for free!
This is my fifth purchase from Knife Art and I can say they are by far the best internet-based company to deal with.
Thumb stud hurts. The knife is not as smooth as I had seen in videos. Perhaps break in will fix that, but I have opened and closed it a LOT and it still feels the same as when I first got it. The s35vn is sharp and the main grinds look even. The carbon fiber is nice and textured for a good grip. Lock up was very early, but it has settled in a bit more, giving me confidence it will not close on me. There is still stick, which I prefer over lock rock, but it would be nice had they addressed this in some way. Blade centering is right down the middle. The pocket clip being so small made me think it would fall out, but it works as well as any other pocket clip I have used, Nice knife, just the opening is painful.
This is an awesome knife. Well constructed, it feels solid and stable in your hand, and inspires confidence when it snaps open and locks in. The blade is super sharp S35VN. The carbon fiber scales provide for a secure, bombproof feel when it is in your hand. An excellent purchase process from KnifeArt.com. Will definitely shop here again for my next knife purchase.

My OCD tendancies tried hard to find flaws with close and considerable examination, but failed miserably. Rock solid lock up, good blade centering, razor sharp, smooth as silk action, and excellently finished knife.
The titanium liners are thick, and lock bar blade tang interface is wide with a lot of surface area in clean straight engagement, but with perfectly early lock up. Lock doesn't stick, and feels as solid as a frame lock.
The carbon fiber has a matte finish with good non-slippery grip texture, and the 3D milling feels fantastic in hand. It's not crazy grippy, but I never felt like I would drop it accidentally while alternating between different grips in use.
Beautiful stonewash over the perfectly ground blade. I can't say enough about this knife. It exceeded expectations, in every way.
I love the pocket clip, and while it does not contact the handle at the bend, I believe this is intentional as the retention in pocket is strong, and would be excessive if it was hard against the handle. The gap is just enough to allow it to go onto the pocket material and hold, but not difficult or pant shredding. This knife is NOT going to slip out of pocket.
Blade and handle length are almost exactly like ZT 0450, but fills the hand better than that and the Small Sebenza. Don't get me wrong. I still love and carry both of those knives, but this one is definitely a great addition.
Perfect balance and ergos for my medium sized hands.
Very strong and confidence inspiring liner lock, while maintaining liner-lock simplicity in disengagement.
In my humble opinion, it compares to knives that cost twice as much in regards to materials, fit, finish, and design.
You can tell the makers of this superb knife are passionate about their work with incredible attention to detail.
For what it's worth, subjectively, I'd say it's one of the best additions to my collection in years.
I could go on about the thumb stud, high flat grind, jimping, ricasso, plunge grind, edge length, bevel, grind angles, etc... But this has already gotten too long. You'll just have to get one in hand for yourself...
