For a sharp-looking and top performing bushcraft knife, look no further than the new Ursus 45 from Michigan-based White River Knives. From its name - shared with the Latin word for "bear" -to its simple but elegant design, the Ursus 45 with an attractive olive-green Micarta handle is ideally suited to a number of tough outdoor tasks.

Users of the Ursus 45 will find its 4.5-inch blade and 8.3 ounces make it the perfect length and weight for camping, backpacking and hunting work, including preparing food, processing firewood, and building shelter. Constructed from CPM S35VN steel, the stone-washed blade with a hardness rating of 58-60 and a blade thickness of 0.158-inch will hold up under hard use. Its overall length of 9.5 inches makes the Ursus 45 with Black and OD Green Micarta handle the perfect size for taking into the wilderness. This drop point blade and the stout build makes this knife perfect for batoning when you need to leverage your knife with larger branches during shelter building.

The top line of the Ursus 45 is rounded at the handle before making the transition to a sharper edge; you can use the included Ferro rod to easily get a fire started. The bolt-on handle is made of Micarta to be both comfortable to grip and long-lasting. Its olive-green hue - dubbed "olive drab" - is subtle for those who prefer a more natural color. Either wet or dry this handle provides excellent traction in your hand. At the end of the handle, a small loop lets you attach the knife to a lanyard if desired.

Each Ursus 45 knife is made completely in the U.S. and comes with a high-quality brown leather sheath and a Ferro rod that is attached with a small stretch cord so it won't get lost.

Despite the relative paucity of written reviews and non-English-language-video reviews online about the Ursus 45 (the couple of substantive ones I watched were in German), I decided after looking at many photos and reading up on the White River Knives brand and its family-run company to buy one through KnifeArt. Having purchased other knives from Larry and Rodney gave me enough confidence to try this superlative knife. Any knife connoisseur worth his salt already knows the Connelley brothers don't sell junk; naturally they and White River Knives hit a grand slam with this beauty! The Ursus 45 offers the absolute most comfortable grip of ANY knife I own, folder or fixed, and that includes at least two in my collection with rubberized handles/scales. I can't get over how deceptively simple yet simultaneously elegant, awe-inspiring and absolutely USEFUL this knife is. We all know how micarta, CPM S35VN, and a solid multiuse blade can make our purchasing decisions easy. After receiving, scrutinizing, and putting this work of art through some basic paces, and then speaking directly with the manufacturer at length, I'm convinced I made a fantastic choice. The Cammenga family and their White River products are the best-kept secret in the knife world, though I don't expect that to last very long. Their ethos, especially nowadays, gives me hope for the future of American business--and I'm honored and proud to own a WRK blade (and DEFINITELY more in the future). In closing, you will not be disappointed with the craftsmanship and QUALITY that suffuses this knife. I have no doubt it will also perform quite well the more challenging tasks to which I subject it. Those will take place soon. KnifeArt's legendary swift delivery, communication, and best-quality offerings make it the choice for your knife needs. (And addiction!)
