Benchmade's 940 series has long been a popular choice as an American-made everyday carry knife. The folder, designed by Warren Osborn, features a slim profile and a long blade in a lightweight folder. But if you've wanted the 940 with an easily grippable G-10 handle, you've probably been out of luck... until now. The name "benchmade" came from the marriage of custom "handmade" and mass-production "factory-made" that described the craftsmanship and quality of their product best. Benchmade was an innovator in the knife industry, building an operation that made precision parts, but with hand assembly on the finished products. It describes Benchmade’s position in the market even to this day.
At the 2016 Blade Show, the company introduced the Benchmade 940-2, an upgrade to its well-loved 940. While G-10 handles have been available in some limited editions or dealer exclusives of the 940, now that's the standard. This model also specifically honors designer Osborn, who passed away in January of 2016.
The 940-2's blade, like that of the 940, is made from tough CPM-S30V stainless steel with a hardness of 58-60 RC. The S30V steel is a specialty particle steel that was developed for the cutlery industry. With a reverse tanto style and flat grind, the 3.4-inch blade is both useful for everyday tasks and holds up well under regular use. An attractive satin finish reduces glare.
The 940-2's stainless steel frame and liner boasts Benchmade's proprietary AXIS® lock system for safety and ambidextrous closing, and a thumb stud opener make it simple to operate with either hand. The open backspacer design and anodized green barrel spacers add upscale details. The 3D-milled, G-10 handle that's new on the 940-2 gives you great grip and durability. G10 is an extremely durable material made of layers of fiberglass soaked in resin, then highly compressed and baked. It allows the handle to withstand both moisture and climate change. Reverse the tip-up pocket clip if needed to make it fully operational for a lefty. The handle is 4.47 inches long and 0.44 inches thick.
