The Chris Reeve Small Sebenza 21 Folding Knife is the more diminutive kin of the large Sebenza 21. The small Sebenza is an everyday carry knife featuring the simple, yet effective Chris Reeve design which made the Sebenza what is considered by many to be the perfect folding knife. A simple titanium blade which has been lapped completely flat, married to a blade that has been flattened again after heat treatment gives you that bank-vault lock feel with a spring steel type lockbar mechanism you can trust and feel.

Who is Chris Reeve?

For nearly 30 years, Chris Reeve sebenza knives have been turning heads among knife aficionados, cutlery enthusiasts, and people who recognize quality and aren't afraid to pay for exactly what they get. But there might be a lot you don't know about what goes into the making of these knives, or the man who proudly puts his name behind his product and the company moniker. Chris Reeve is a stickler for detail and precision to say the least. South African born in 1953, Chris began his trade in tool and die making, which considering the high degrees of tolerance personified in his blades, isn't much of a leap of the imagination.

The Small Sebenza 21

Perhaps the most famous of his knives is the sebenza 21. Renowned among collectors, enthusiasts, and anyone who expects only the best in form, function, and bare-bones aesthetics, this knife is named for the Zulu word meaning "work" and does exactly that. It is the definition of "no-frills". What you do get is a simple titanium handle, surface ground and fitted to a multipurpose S35VN stainless steel blade that has been ground, heat treated and quenched and then surface ground again to tolerances within 1/10th of 1000th of an inch. These tolerances rival even those of the aerospace industry and give a smooth opening blade, reliable and durable catch, as well as no side motion at all. The steel at a Rockwell hardness of 59-60 is versatile enough to keep from breaking even in the toughest of conditions, yet tough enough to hold an edge for a very long time on that hollow ground edge. The CPM particle metallurgy of the steel allows for both.

The Devil is in the Details

The hollow ground blade is stonewashed at 20,500 RPMs to give it a corrosion resistant, non-reflective finish that allows for a longer lasting edge than bead blasted competitors. It's also pretty stunning to look at. The pieces are assembled by hand and set in place by screws tightened to a specific torque. Even the chamfer on the back of the blade is cut by hand to give it that added grip and performance you can come to expect from the crk sebenza 21. Once it's locked in place with Chris Reeve's own locking mechanism, that blade isn't going anywhere you don't want it to go. The 2.94" blade compliments the overall 6.875" length nicely, giving it balance as well as a perfect utilitarian length and just .4" thick.

An All Purpose Sebbie

For tough cutting jobs, constant use, or a daily carry knife, you'll want the small sebbie stashed away in your jeans pocket or on to your belt held by the titanium clip, ready to go whenever you need it. While in use, the nylon lanyard will keep it from getting too far if you drop it too, providing that extra piece of mind you'll want for what is to become your favorite knife. An optional leather belt sheath or calfskin leather pouch will keep it safe and clean, folded up for easy access.

Precision You Can Expect from a Sebenza Folding Knife

Aside from the precision, craftsmanship, and attention to detail that makes the sebenza 21 world famous, Your small Sebenza folding knife is perfect for outdoor pursuits, camping, boating, tactical or survival applications. Not only that, but it is a unique, and striking knife to behold. So be prepared for a conversation anytime this knife comes out, especially if you are around people who know their blades.

Saying that Chris Reeve sebenza knives are the epitome of detail and craftmanship is an understatement. Down to the thumb lug, which is machined to be slightly larger than the retention hole to keep it fixed into place. The .125" thick blade tapers down to a microscopic sharpness, hollow ground on a 5" wheel by hand to give it a useful sharpening area for decades to come.

Is it Worth It? Is it for me?

In a word, yes. But the price tag of any Chris Reeve sebenza knife shouldn't make you shy away from using it. It's a tool that is ready for any challenge, with a lifetime warranty to back it. Whether it is daily use, cutting rope, wood, plastic, leather, or nylon webbing, you have a reliable blade you can count on, which just gets smoother and more comfortable in your hand with every use. Proudly made in Idaho, these blades support American industry and families and are representative of the quality people should expect from American made products. At knifeart.com, we are glad to sing the praises of this entire line of knives. No matter your line of work, from blue collar to white, this knife holds its own against any other. With a variety of uses, the Chris Reeve sebenza has the strength, durability, and warranty befitting a blade that is more than a tool, but also a work of art.

I have gotten to the point in life where I want to own fewer things, but I want those things to be of higher quality. I've carried a knife of one kind or another for decades, and that was the last item in my pocket to get the upgrade. I researched and shopped around for the perfect EDC knife for a few years. Of all of the top contenders for me, the Small Sebenza was the only one that I couldn't handle in-person. I took the plunge on the Sebenza with Knife Art because of their return policy, figuring that if I didn't like it, I'd send it back before using it. Not to worry. This knife is everything I hoped it would be, and in my opinion, it lives up to the Sebenza hype. If you want a simple, elegant, American-made, rock-solid titanium framelock of the highest quality that will be a joy to carry every day, this is your knife. Knife Art's free shipping was crazy fast, their service excellent. I'll send anyone here for knives in the future.

For me the small Sebenza is the perfect size for EDC. The fit and finish was excellent and the shipping from KnifeArt was fast. Out of the box the blade wasn't as sharp as I like. I few passes on my strop and it was shaving the hair from my arm. This was my first high end production knife and I feel it was money well spent. Excellent knife.

I have learned that knife people have very strong opinions and deep loyalities. Many have said that this knife is not as good as some Spyderco or Benchmade knives and that it's certainly not worth the money. I too have a strong opinion but my loyaliteis are based on performance and I strongly believe that this is the best made and perfect edc. I own many knives (over 20), including Spyderco, Benchmade, William Henry, and CRKT to name a few and not one of them (except WH but they are rather delicate) come close in terms of fit and finish, quality and duaribility - period and that's why it costs a bit more. I think it's worth the price and I would rather have one of these over two - three other knives that total to the same value. This is the best made and most solid folder that I have experienced. Solid, good feel, excellent blade steel, few parts to break and wear out, easy to clean/maintain and excellent support from the manufacturer. It does not open as easily or fast as my Spyderco or Bechmade knives but that is not the most important thing to me. THe most important is the quality, cutting ability and durability. All my other knives have some sort of lateral blade movement but the Chris Reeve knives do not.

On minor problem that was handled very appropriately was that the knife when received was not as sharp as I expected. I called Chris Reeve and they were concerned and very quickly sent me a return label to ship back to them for sharpening at no cost to me. Everything else was perfect and this issue was fixed.

Best edc knife for me!!!

5  Simple Perfection, Chris Reeve Small Sebenza 21

And behind that simplicity there are decades of perfecting this plain-looking yet incredible performing titanium folder from Chris Reeve. I have a fair number of folders in my collection, most high-end production and some custom but I keep searching for that every day carry piece that I will commit to. This may be it-- finally. Like all Chris Reeve knifes the materials and manufacture quality is second to none. I really like the blade shape and stone wash finish, which is complimented by the plain bead blasted titanium scales. It locks open with assurance and has a reasonable closure detent for carry. This small knife fits into every pocket I want and it even dissapears when carried in-waist band on jeans but with the dual ribbed retainer clip I'm confident it won't work its way out. If you collect knives or are looking for a high utility EDC, this should be on your list.

Knife Art purchasing was awesome- from the great web site with big photos and payment options and then on to immediate shipping! I will definitely be back to "maintain" my collection so it does not get stale. Thanks, Knife Art!

I just purchased this knife as a gift and am very happy with the design - the finish of the blade and frame are much nicer in person than it appears in photos. I'm also very pleased with ordering through Knife Art - great customer service and my order arrived quickly.

5  Not too big, not too small, Chris Reeve Small Sebenza 21

It goes without saying, the quality of this knife is superb. I was a little worried that the Small would be too small, but I have now had it for several weeks, and it is perfect for true everyday carry. The Large is over 8 inches when open, which can be intimidating even among friends. I can use the Small in public without drawing undue attention. The 4 x 1 x 3/8-in rectangular handle comfortably fills the palm of my hand, and the blade is substantial, 1/8-in thick and tapers more gradually toward the point than the Large blade. Having paid this much for a pocket knife, I am happy to say this one will definitely get used a lot more than a Large.

Like many reviewers, I can't say this knife just leapt out of the box at me, but after carrying it a few days, it has quickly become my favorite. Very sharp right out of the box. a beautifully finished, suitably thick blade rides perfectly centered between two superbly machined slabs of titanium. Opening is smooth as silk, if not incredibly fast, and the locking mechanism clicks in authoritatively. I have no worries about a lock failure with this knife. Closing the knife is also smooth and you know when the knife is safe. The titanium pocket clip holds the knife securely in jeans, although it could be a little deeper. The fasteners are countersunk and of the highest quality. The blue accents give the knife a bit of a unique look. The thumb stud could be a little bigger, but it doesn't take long to get used to opening this knife. I have found no burrs, nicks, etc., on the knife at all. It is simply flawless. Overall, an excellent bladed tool for EDC and, since it will last more than a lifetime, absolutely worth the price.

I'd read about the Sebenza 21 online. I managed to save my pennies and finally made the purchase.

Best knife I've ever bought.

It comes very, very sharp. The opening and closing is quite smooth and it feels nice and solid.

Worth every penny!
