The Warren Osborne Design
Warren Osborne was a rancher and custom knifemaker from Waxahachie, Texas who designed knives for people who used them. The reverse tanto blade on the Benchmade 940 has a flat grind that uses the full blade length, a strong tip, and a profile that handles both fine cutting and hard use. KnifeArt sold Osborne custom knives. When Benchmade introduced the Benchmade Osborne 940 at Blade Show in 2000, it was immediately recognized as one of the best production EDC knives ever made, and nothing in 25 years has changed that.
940-2 vs 940-1 vs 940
The original Benchmade 940 used anodized aluminum scales. The 940-2 replaced them with 3D milled black G10, warmer in the hand and more secure in wet conditions, at 2.65 oz. The Benchmade 940-1 is the premium tier: CPM-S90V for better edge retention and a carbon fiber handle to save weight. For most buyers the 940-2 is the right choice. S30V holds an excellent edge for daily carry, G10 is more comfortable over a long day than carbon fiber, and the price difference is real. If edge retention under hard use is the priority, the 940-1 is worth it. Both carry the same lifetime warranty and LifeSharp coverage.
The 940-2 as an EDC
The Benchmade 940 EDC reputation is 25 years in the making. At 2.65 oz. and 0.44 inches thick, it disappears in a pocket. The reverse tanto is flat-ground to 15 degrees per side and ready to work. The AXIS lock opens and closes one-handed, ambidextrously, every time. There is nothing superfluous in the design and nothing missing. The Benchmade 940 Osborne is the folder we recommend most often to buyers who want a serious knife at a realistic price.
Warranty and LifeSharp
Buying from an authorized dealer means your 940-2 qualifies for the Benchmade lifetime warranty and the Benchmade LifeSharp program. LifeSharp covers sharpening, cleaning, and adjustment at no charge for as long as you own the knife.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Benchmade 940-2 worth buying?
Yes. For a Benchmade 940 review from 20 years of selling them: 2.65 oz., CPM-S30V, AXIS lock, G10 handle, American manufacturing, and LifeSharp. The Warren Osborne design has been proven daily by people who rely on their knives for 25 years. The repeat purchase rate tells the story.
What is the difference between the 940 and the 940-2?
The original Benchmade 940 had anodized aluminum handle scales. The 940-2 replaced them with 3D machined black G10 and added an open backspacer design. Blade steel is CPM-S30V on both. The 940-2 is the current production version.
What steel does the 940-2 use?
CPM-S30V at 58-60 HRC. The Benchmade 940-1 upgrades to CPM-S90V for better edge retention at a higher price. For most daily carry users S30V in the 940-2 is the right balance of performance and value.

I’m very impressed with the sleek and sturdy design of this knife. Feels more of a solid knife versus the bug out. And the knife collection continues...thanks knifeart for the excellent and quick service.

I have (3) Osborn 940 series knives. These are great lightweight EDC knives with great action. However, the blade on this one came off center unlike my other two that are.
